San Gimignano

During the struggle between rival families, or between supporters of the Welfs hand and on the other the Ghibellines, they entrenched themselves between the towers and fought it as their often bloody feuds out. The city had 72 towers. In the late middle ages this town was very prosperous because the location of the pilgrimage route to Rome. But the plague of 1348 and after the rearrangement of the pilgrimage meant economic ruin, but retaining its medieval character.
